Chapter 8 - Of Frogs and Weasels

Instead of her intended overnight stay, Kayla’s sojourn in Thurgis Village lasted for nearly three days.

The morning after her first night at the Happy Hylidae Inn, Kayla was surprised to find the stout innkeeper absent from his perch behind the long wooden counter. She also found the young busboy, Ostan - was it? - slumped in a corner, half-hidden by a broken table, bloody and unconscious - or dead. That was when she noticed that not just one but all the tables have been smashed. The chairs had been reduced to splinters, while the booths were overturned and bore pockmarks, as though they had been bludgeoned by large clubs. She also noticed that most of the glass windows had been shattered. What happened here? Had she been too exhausted to hear the ruckus?

Kayla ran up the stairs back to her room, hastily grabbed Izraa’s cloak, and slipped it over her shoulders. Still keeping stride, she pushed the double doors open. A light veil of mist hung over the town, and the wind was pretty nippy.

A handful of people stood just beyond the door as Kayla stepped out. They were whispering amongst themselves and eyeing the inn. As soon as they saw Kayla go through the doors, the murmur quieted down and the people lowered their heads.

An elderly man took about two steps forward, but still kept a decent distance from her. “Are you hurt, rahani?” he asked, squinting in her direction.

Kayla shook her head. “No, but the boy, the steward... he was badly beaten up. I don’t know what happened. Is there somewhere I can ask for help from? Town officials, maybe?”

A woman, probably in her 30s, timidly approached and held out a hand. “It is best not to get involved, rahani. It is not safe.”

Kayla inclined her head to one side. “I’m sorry, I don’t understand. What do you mean by that? What is going on here?”

The woman looked around furtively and whispered, “Vergus, the innkeeper, had a falling out with some dubious-looking men a few days ago. They were drunk and got into a heated discussion with the innkeeper. A case of not paying for their food and drinks. They probably came back to rough him up.” The woman fearfully darted her eyes about before adding, “You should probably leave town, rahani. Your life could be in danger, if they learn that Prince Izreal’s betrothed is staying in this town all by herself.”

Ugh, not this again! If it wasn’t too cold, Kayla would have ditched the cloak by now. She drew in a deep breath before speaking aloud. “Where is the town chief’s office? I need to report this.”

The old man and the woman tried to dissuade Kayla, but she insisted. After being given the proper directions, she rode towards the southern end of the village where the town magister held office.
